Big Bash League Predictions: Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Thunder

January 24, 2020, Bellerive Oval, Hobart

Hobart Hurricanes host Sydney Thunder on Friday in their penultimate games as they look to keep their faint hope of playoffs alive.

The Hurricanes have 9 points from 12 games and a win against the Thunder will take them level on points with their Friday’s opponents. The Hurricanes are coming on the back of a 4-run win over Melbourne Renegades.

Meanwhile, Sydney have 11 points from their 12 games and a win will see them rise at least 1 place. They are coming on the back of an 8-wicket defeat against Perth Scorchers.

Sydney Thunder had beaten Hurricanes when these 2 sides had met the last time.

Hobart Hurricanes performance in Big Bash League:

Matthew Wade and Macalister Wright scored 65+ each and added 84 runs for the first wicket against Melbourne Renegades as they won by 4 runs.

The bowlers then did their job as they survived a blinder from Mohammad Nabi.

They would like to build on the momentum and continue their late push for the playoff spot.

D Arcy Short is the Hurricanes’ leading scorer despite missing a few games. He has 248 runs from 6 games and the other batsmen need to step up.

They are not doing great with the ball either. Qais Ahmad is their leading wicket-taker, 14th in the overall list.

Hurricanes predicted XI:

George Bailey, Matthew Wade (c), David Miller, James Faulkner, Clive Rose, Ben McDermott (wk), D Arcy Short, Qais Ahmad, Caleb Jewell, Riley Meredith, Nathan Ellis

Sydney Thunder performance in Big Bash League:

Usman Khawaja had a rare failure while Alex Hales took the charge with 85 from 59 in Thunder’s last game against Perth Scorchers. However, no one other than Hales, got going as they could only muster 153 runs.

The bowlers didn’t do them any justice, allowing the target to be chased within 15.3 overs.

Hales is their leading run scorer with 339 runs. However, even he is well off from the leading run scorer in the tournament which shows how badly Thunders are struggling for the runs. Callum Ferguson is 25 runs behind him.

They will have to do better with both bat and ball if they are to keep themselves in the playoff contention.

Today’s match toss prediction:

In each of their last 3 games, St Kitts won the toss and chose to field. In each of their last 3 games, Jamaica won the toss and chose to field. In every game, anyone who wins the toss chooses to field. It seems like the game in which Chris Gayle will dominate, as he did in the return fixture with a 116 off 62 balls. And with a more balanced and penetrating bowling attack than St. Kitts, they should be able to record just their 2nd win of CPL 2019.

Sydney Thunder predicted XI:

Callum Ferguson (c), Usman Khawaja, Alex Hales, Chris Morris, Gurinder Sandhu, Alex Ross, Jay Lenton (wk), Arjun Nair, Brendan Doggett, Liam Bowe, Daniel Sams
