Match Prediction: India vs Australia, 1st ODI
January 14, 2020, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
After beating Sri Lanka in the T20Is, India host Australia in the 3-match ODI series, starting Tuesday. The schedule of the series hints at plenty of runs, with matches set to be played in Mumbai, Rajkot and Bengaluru.
Whenever these 2 teams have met, the games have lived up to anticipation. The excitement has been such that of the last 9 ODI’s played between the 2 sides, India have won 5 while Australia have won 4.
Nearly 12 months ago, Aaron Finch & Co. had travelled to India to take on a side many expected to go all the way in the ICC Cricket World Cup later in the year. Neither team went on to reach the final in the World Cup, but Australia’s 3-2 series win over India marked a crucial moment in what had proved a significant form swing.
India’s Performance in ODI:
India has a great headache on top of the order. All 3 openers Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are fit and available for selection after being rested in the last few series.
Dhawan had scored a century when the 2 teams had met the last time. In fact, he has 2 centuries in his last 3 games against Australia. Meanwhile, Rahul has been in scintillating form and has been performing whenever he has got the chance.
Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, fancies facing Australia, one of his favourite opponents.
In the middle, Shreyas Iyer looks to have fixed his place in the squad with brilliant performances.
With the ball, Jasprit Bumrah returns to the ODI squad after missing with injuries. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is still missing and Hardik Pandya’s absence means one of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal will once again have to settle with a place on the bench.
Australia’s Performance in ODI:
It is Australia’s first ODI series since the World Cup.
David Warner and Steven Smith return to the squad, so do Alex Carey and Peter Handscomb.
Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne’s fortunes have been on the rise ever since he walked in as an injury replacement for Steve Smith in a test match. He has got his maiden ODI call-up.
D’Arcy Short was added to the Australia squad as a replacement for Sean Abbott, who suffered a moderate side strain while playing for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.
Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis are missing from the squad despite lightening the Big Bash League.
