Today’s Football Match Prediction: Liverpool vs Red Bull Salzburg
October 3, 2019,
For all the fantasy football geeks out there, we share prediction tips of league matches that will give them a better shot at predicting and winning. Starting with EPL 2019.
Liverpool host Red Bull Salzburg as they look to return to winning ways in Champions League after losing to Napoli in their group opener. Salzburg are undefeated in their domestic league. However, they have dropped 2 points and lead the table with 5 points. Liverpool, meanwhile, have won all their league games so far and lead by 5 points as well.
Squads and Predicted Lineups:
Alisson is closing in on a first-team return after missing last nine matches in all competitions. However, he will likely be recalled only after the international break. Divock Origi returned from injury in Liverpool’s 1-0 win away to Sheffield United in the English Premier League at the weekend, but Nathaniel Clyne and Xherdan Shaqiri are still missing.
Georginio Wijnaldum is likely to get the nod over James Milner in the midfield.
Jurgen Klopp is likely to stick to his 4-3-3 formation.
Predicted line-up: Adrian; Andrew Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Trent Alexander-Arnold; Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum; Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino.
Red Bull Salzburg
Erling Haaland scored a first half hat-trick as Salzburg defeated Genk 6-2 in their Champions League opener. However, Haaland emerges as a doubt for Wednesday night’s Champions League fixture at Liverpool with illness. If fit, he is likely to lead the line with Hwang Hee-Chan or else Sekou Koita will replace him.
Haaland had notably scored 9 goals in Norway’s 12-0 win over Honduras at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Antoine Bernede is out after picking up an injury at the weekend and will have to be replaced in midfield, with Enock Mwepu a candidate to deputise. Other than that, Salzburg are expected to name the side that faced Genk.
Salzburg are likely to stick to the 4-2-2-2 formation they followed in the first game.
Predicted line-up: Cican Stankovic; Rasmus Kristensen, Jerôme Onguéné, André Ramalho, Andreas Ulmer; Enock Mwepu, Zlatko Junuzovic; Takumi Minamino, Dominik Szoboszlai; Erling Haaland, Hwang Hee-Chan.
With this, we move on to predicting which team will today’s match?
1- Salzburg have only lost once in their last 17 away group stage games in Europe, all of which came in the Europa League. Salzburg are winless against English opponents- 3 losses and 1 draw, a streak that is likely to extend.
2- Liverpool haven’t lost a Champions League home match in nearly five years and are unbeaten at Anfield in their last 24 matches, something the European Champions should be able to build on.
3- It will be Liverpool and Red Bull Salzburg’s first meeting. Liverpool have won 4 of their 6 meetings against Austrian sides and the last time they lost, in 2004 qualifiers, the Reds went on to win the competition.
4- Salzburg have conceded 2 or more goals in all their games against English teams, and barring any surprises are likely to concede so again, given the threat Liverpool’s front 3 possess.
5- Liverpool could become only the second defending champion of European Cup/ Champions League to lose their first 2 matches of the following campaign- after Nottingham Forest in 1980-81. Given the tricky nature of the EPL 2019 and Salzburg’s confidence, it cannot be completely written off.
6- While a lot of focus has been on Liverpool’s back force of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson, it’s in fact Fabinho who has made the most tackles (17) by any Liverpool player in the Premier League this season.
